All attendees must have attended the Ex repair, module 1, within the last three years to fully understand the concepts, types of equipment and suitability etc. to attend the hands on course.

The Hands-on course has been designed to ensure that managers, supervisors and technicians, who are involved with the repair of hazardous area equipment fully understand the practicalities of ensuring that equipment is repaired to maintain all the safety aspects embodied in the original certificate or standards.

Hands-on Module 2:

The course is for delegates, who have attended the first module on hazardous area repair, but have little practical experience of how to repair hazardous area equipment. During the course they will gain experience of measuring flame paths etc. and be assessed on their ability at the end of the course.

Hands-on (R) Refresher Course:

The Hands-on (R). Refresher course contains all of the syllabus of the Module 2 Hands on course, but is for delegates who have been repairing hazardous area equipment and either require a three year refresher, or wish to upgrade with the hands on course by having their ability assessed. Because the attendees are familiar with most aspects of the practical course, they are able to complete this part of the course quicker, and be assessed on their workmanship. The course also updates delegates on recent changes in standards, or equipment and answers any problems encountered by delegates in the group discussions. The hands-on 2R is a combination course held in Aberdeen, Dubai, Indonesia, Kuala Lumpur, Qatar, Singapore and Thailand.

Equipment Provided:

The course equipment utilises, Calculators, Digital Vernier Callipers with depth gauge, Micrometers, inside/outside measuring facility, Engineers rule, Feeler Gauges, Screw thread gauges (Go, No-go,) Engineers straight edge, Test facility for No load, and Lock Torque demonstrations (at Loughborough). Relevant British Standards, Power point displays. The AEMT Ex Machine Repair Report Forms and a variety of used motors and pumps for practical experience. Delegates are also provided with extensive course notes. Assessments are both practical using the AEMT Repair Report, and multiple-choice questions.

Safety Clothing:

Delegates should ensure that they bring suitable overalls and safety shoes.

Syllabus:

The course has a balance of seminar and practical elements. All delegates fill in "AEMT Ex Machine Repair Report Forms" and take measurements of flamepaths on a variety of machines. Procedures for Ex "d", Ex"de", Ex "e" and Ex "n" are covered.

The course syllabus contains:

• Health and Safety aspects including "Certificates of Safety" relating to the actual equipment being received.
• Best Workshop Practice: including the procedures that should be in place to repair Ex equipment.
• Procedures to be used on receipt of the apparatus.
• Dismantling:
  • Recording motor/pump/apparatus details. Customer information. Dismantling procedure.
• Initial inspection and measurements:
  • Nameplate Details. Initial Tests. Internal and External visual inspection. Terminal layout and inspection. Rigid flanged joint surfaces. Spigot joint gaps. Flamepaths. Drilled holes. Bearings. Axial alignment.
• Winding Data: (if applicable to the delegates)
  • Recording winding details. Stripping Stator. Core damage. Cleaning procedures, including burnout procedure. Damage to laminations and air gap measurement.
• Overhaul and Recovery:
  • Including welding and metal spraying advice. Tightening of fasteners, and recovery parameters.
• Final inspection & Reassembly.
• Testing:
  • Incorporating Core Tests. Winding Tests. Phase balance Tests. Insulation resistance tests. Flash Tests. Demonstration of No Load test and Locked Rotor Tests.
• Estimation of Motor Losses and Efficiency.
• Final Reporting, Records and Labelling.
• Tool, equipment, and standards requirements.
• Refresher:
  • For delegates on the refresher course (R). There will also be updates on revisions to Atex, DSEAR, Standards, equipment and procedures that have occurred over the past three years.
• Assessment:
  • There will be a multiple choice assessment on the procedures covered above as well as a practical assessment involving the use of the AEMT repair form to take the necessary records and measurements. (Delegates on the Module 2 version will have covered these aspects in the Module 1 course.)
